WISCONSIN — A Wisconsin native made her Broadway debut earlier this month.
Sophia Tzougros is now starring alongside award-winning actor George Clooney in the Broadway production, “Good Night and Good Luck.”
Tzougros’ budding theater career started at Kettle Moraine School for Arts and Performance in Wales, Wisconsin. While in high school, Tzougros was a part of the Overture Center for the Arts’ Jerry Awards, which recognizes excellence in musical theater for high schoolers.
She was also selected in 2014 at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards to represent the Overture Center at the Jimmy Awards.
Now, she’s taking on New York City in “Good Night and Good Luck.”
The show is a stage adaption of the critically acclaimed 2005 film, which was directed by Clooney, and written by himself and Grant Heslov.
It follows the story of legendary broadcaster Edward R. Murrow and his team at CBS in their pursuit against McCarthyism, also known as the Second Red Scare, a fear-mongering movement led by Sen. Joseph McCarthy in the 50s. Tzougros said the play calls back to the popular documentary TV series produced by Murrow, “See It Now,” which aired during that time and addressed McCarthyism.
Ultimately, Tzougros said the play focuses on a quest for “justice and truth.”
As an ensemble member, Tzougros is embedded in that storyline onstage, sitting in the booth to passing out script edits.
She said this what’s special about his play is the sheer size of the ensembe and cast, which is about 25 people.
“That is pretty unheard of nowadays, especially for a play,” she said.
Tzougros said getting to work with icon Clooney has been unbelievable.
“It’s really incredible to get to work with a huge company of very seasoned actors and get to learn from them,” she said.
“Good Night and Good Luck” runs through Sunday, June 8, 2025 at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City.
