LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentuckians are finally breaking free from snow and ice thanks to members of Goodwill Industries' Another Way program.

What You Need To Know

  • Members of Goodwill Industries' Another Way program are digging out Kentuckians held up by snow and ice

  • They've cleared ice and snow at 25 homes around the city this week

  • The organization prioritizes helping older residents

  • Many Another Way members are experiencing or transitioning out of homelessness

Members of the Another Way program spent their Friday clearing several inches of ice and snow from Juanita Coogle's home on Breckenridge Lane. Coogle has not been able to drive out of her lane since Jan. 5. and said her refrigerator is all but empty at this point.

Coogle said her son had tried to shovel the driveway himself, but it was too big of a job. She then called Metro311 to report her situation to the city of Louisville, and that's when Goodwill Industries stepped in.

“We started this Monday; we've been doing it all week," said Sharon Allgeier, manager of Another Way Homeless Initiatives.

Her team creates a list of snowed-in homes, which the city provides and prioritizes older residents.

Many participants of the Another Way program are experiencing homelessness or transitioning out of it. Participating members earn a wage and experience working on a team.

“Goodwill, they gave me an opportunity for change, and this is part of it," said Milton Hampton.

"Helping the community through Goodwill, that’s really amazing ... doing work for the city, it really means a lot to me," said Tracy Ward.

Another Way members have cleared 25 homes this week, giving those residents safe access to their vehicles and city streets since many of their driveways were blocked in by large snow banks.
