LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky State University and the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections have come together for a unique partnership.
The two have formed the Correctional Certificate Pathway for LMDC corrections officers. The new pathway will meet the educational needs of LMDC correctional officers and give them a way to advance their careers.
“We are pleased to partner with the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections to support correctional officers. The Correctional Certificate Pathway will provide officers the educational tools to enhance their service and careers,” said KSU President, Dr. Koffi C. Akakpo.
To help those interested in the program, financial aid, academic advising, tutoring and other support services will be offered.
After completing the courses, LMDC correctional officers will earn a certificate from KSU. Credits they earn will also apply to earning a degree at KSU.
“We are looking forward to building a great partnership with Kentucky State University to assist our staff in furthering their education during their career at LMDC. The partnership not only allows our officers to receive a certificate, but it gets them started toward earning a degree if they choose,” said Chief Jerry Collins, Director of LMDC.
KSU did a similar partnership with the Lexington-Fayette County Detention Center in July. That program offers online courses with four majors and three electives at $350 per semester or a discounted price.
Koffi Akakpo, KSU president, said its goal was to keep the program accessible.
