LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Popular convenience store chain Wawa broke ground on its first Kentucky stores June 5.

The chain is opening locations in Louisville and Nicholasville, just outside of Lexington. Among those in attendance for the Louisville event were John Poplawksi, vice president and chief real estate officer; Joe Collins, director of store operations, state and local officials and even Wawa's mascot, Wally Goose.

Guests enjoyed a "Taste of Wawa," including their signature hoagies and other samples of food and beverages. The Wawa Community Care Vehicle also served coffee, smoothies and refreshers. 

As part of the chain's expansion into Kentucky, it announced community partnerships with Louisville-based Dare to Care Food Bank and Special Olympics Kentucky. 

The Louisville location will be located at 9650 Preston Crossing Blvd., just south of I-265 and next to Menards.

Wawa is a family-owned chain and operates stores in eight states and Washington, D.C.
