ST. LOUIS —Kia drivers have an opportunity to receive a free security software upgrade to prevent theft this weekend beginning Friday, Oct. 27, at the St. Louis Galleria.
The mobile clinic hosted by Kia America is in response to the nationwide increase in car thefts that began in late 2021 when videos on TikTok and other sites illustrate how to start and steal Kia and Hyundai models — using only a screwdriver and a USB cable — started gaining traction.
“The software upgrade is designed to restrict the operation of the vehicle’s ignition system should a criminal try to steal a locked vehicle without the owner’s key through those methods,” a press release states.
“Specially trained mobile service technicians will be on-site to install and complete the upgrade, which has been installed in over 800,000 vehicles across the country thus far. Owners report the process can be completed in approximately 30 minutes.”
There also will be free steering wheel locks for Kia drivers, according to the press release.
The mobile clinic is open Oct. 27-29 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. No appointment is necessary.
The St. Louis Galleria is located at 1155 St. Louis Galleria Street.
