LOUISVILLE,Ky — Nearly two miles of Frankfort Avenue were blocked off Sunday afternoon for the second CycLOUvia event of the year.

What You Need To Know

  • Frankfort Ave. was closed from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

  • CycLOUvia is a city-ran initiative that closes roads to cars

  • Pedestrians and cyclists are allowed

  • The event began in 2012

The Louisville event closes off parts of the city to car traffic, allowing cyclists and pedestrians a chance to experience an automobile-free time. Frankfort Ave. was closed between Pope Street and Stilz Ave.

“I love community events where we can take the streets back to the people and listen, listen to how quiet it is out here because people are able to get out here and bike and walk and dance and play. This is what the streets should be for, for the people,” Denise Greer, a cyclist who lives in Jeffersonville, said.

Greer attended the event with members of an Indiana-based biking group.

Hundreds of cyclists made it out this year, including Catherine Mcbride, who’s easy to spot with her handmade crown and bubble wand.

“You know, our county is really focused on accommodating automobiles and sometimes forgets about people and I think this is really an opportunity for people to really get out and enjoy roads,” McBride said.

Mcbride adds the bubbles make everyone feel like a kid again.

Starting in 2012, CycLOUvia has given thousands of riders a chance to experience their city in a new way, including Jenny Morse and her young daughter, who have attended many of the events.

“We love any opportunity to ride our bikes down the middle of the street, safely, which is rare of course,” Morse said.

Whether you’re six or sixty, an afternoon spent outside getting a little exercise is the perfect way to end the weekend.
