FLORENCE, Ky. — The Florence Aquatic Center is one of many pools throughout Kentucky and the nation opening for Memorial Day weekend.
“It’s been a while since I’ve been here! Feels good to be back,” Maylynne Dickerson said.
She was one of many taking advantage of swimming and sitting poolside as the center opened for the season. However, this year’s celebrations felt like a win for advocates. Brian Kinross said he was one of a few people who wanted to see the pool reopen for the summer after watching it close throughout the pandemic.
“Having this facility has produced some good kids who’ve learned they have talent in swimming, talent in diving,” he said.
The center is home to the Florence Hammerheads, a competitive swim team. Besides the love for the sport, many community members find something fun to do at the center throughout the summer as well.
“I love the lazy river, of course! But I really just like being here and sitting and watching the kids be happy,” Lesley Chambers said.
One kid enjoying the pool was Alisa Adams. She said she loves to swim. When asked how often she’d be here while school was out, she said: “Like 100 days!”
Fans of the center said this opens up something outdoors for kids and families to do.
