WALTON, Ky. — When you step inside Gunnar Dearing's home, you find yourself face to face with a mound of toys. While it's just days away from Christmas, Dearing said those toys aren't for him or his sister Pippa.

“All these toys are for the kids in Mayfield, Kentucky," Dearing said.

What You Need To Know

  • Gunnar Dearing is 12 years old and lives in Walton, Kentucky

  • He saw all the damage in Mayfield and wanted to give kids there a Christmas

  • He said 20 drop off sites in his area were created and his family picks up toys regularly

  • His mission has reached several people across the country, who send amazon packages containing toys his way

You'll find all kinds of toys for kids of all ages in this mound. It makes up part of Operation KY Christmas – an idea Dearing said he came up with himself after seeing all the damage in Mayfield on social media.

“We need to let these kids have a Christmas," Dearing said.

Dearing is only 12 years old.

“Yeah someone who’s 12 and just comes out of it and says, ‘Hey I want to do something and I want to help the community.’ It’s incredible. That’s the only way I can explain it. It’s just an incredible feeling," said Anthony Young, Dearing's step dad.

Dearing said across the area there are about 20 drop off sites for folks to stop in and donate toys for the cause. He and his family grab donations regularly.

But that's not the only way people are donating. He said he and his family find Amazon packages containing gifts for these kids.

“Our whole front porch – we couldn’t even walk out the front door. It was like stacked up to at least my shoulder," Dearing said.

It turns out Dearing's mission isn't just getting help from those nearby. It's reaching a more national audience of people who just want to help.

“It’s incredible to see how far out this is actually reaching. To go all the way out to Arizona and up to Philly," Young said.

“When people step up and and it makes a difference, it just makes more people inspired to do something," Dearing said.

Dearing said he hopes kids are smiling and happy when they get their toys. The trip, he said, will be made on Dec. 23. The toys will be delivered to the fairgrounds in Mayfield.
