FLORENCE, Ky. — The airline industry is one of many to suffer mightily during the coronavirus pandemic.

At one point it was reported U.S. air travel had dropped 95% percent from the same time a year ago. However, as parts of the country continue to open up more Americans are heading to the airport.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Spectrum News 1's Jonathon Gregg traveled from Kentucky to San Francisco, California.

The most recent data from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) shows the number of people flying in the US is up significantly from historic lows reported in mid-April.

On Friday before Memorial Day, there was no wait to enter the security checkpoint at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, CVG. A minor change in the boarding process is people sitting in the rear of the plane walk on first. People are asked to maintain six feet of distance from one another while boarding and deplaning.

Onboard, the traditional beverage service has been replaced with a goody bag which includes, water, snacks, and sanitizing wipes.

Gregg's flight to California included a 2-hour layover in Salt Lake City which was the most crowded of the three airports he visited that day.

When he arrived at SFO, San Francisco International Airport, Gregg says it was very quiet and there was no challenge at all for him to keep his distance from other travelers.
