VERSAILLES, Ky. — Heroes aren’t difficult to find in Woodford County.

That’s why its residents have taken it upon themselves to launch the “Unsung Heroes” campaign meant to recognize everyday heroes doing extraordinary things.

“Communities are made up of great people and that’s what it takes to have heroes. And so, in Woodford County, we have so many folks that have done good things and they’re loving and caring,” said Megan Fields, a Woodford Chamber member. “And they’re just people that have shown just compassion during this COVID-19. And that’s what we wanted to do is celebrate those folks that have done good deeds.”

Two of Woodford’s heroes are Rebecca Burnworth and Jonathan Sanning from The Stave Restaurant in Millville. They have both taken care of their staff while providing accessible takeout options for customers.

“I’m extremely flattered,” said Burnworth, owner of The Stave. “Like [Jonathan] said, we just try to do what we try to do. And somebody recognizing that, it’s a little strange for me.”

Another hero can be found at Woodford County Detention Center where jailer Michele Rankin is leading inmates as they sew together masks. Under her leadership, the inmates have produced over 12,000 masks.

“To say that I’m an unsung hero, I’m one of those people that tries to stay out of the limelight,” said Rankin. “I just want to help change lives and give back. And my motto is everybody has somebody, somebody.”

“Everybody’s a winner in this,” said Fields. “It’s just recognition, which is a whole lot for folks that do these things on the backside. You forget about those folks that aren’t up front and center.”

Woodford County will continue to recognize its unsung heroes through the end of June.
