LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After discovering 27 positive cases of COVID-19 among staff and clients, child welfare nonprofit organization Maryhurst announced how it is responding to the outbreak at its residential campus.

The positive cases include 15 staff and 12 clients; however, 155 staff remain untested. All residents have received tests.

“We know for our community who cares about Maryhurst’s mission, our staff, and the children in our programs – this has been upsetting news,” said Paula Garner, Maryhurst’s chief operating officer. “Our hope is that you’ll share your thoughts, prayers, and best wishes with our staff and clients as we move through this challenge together.”

Norton Healthcare came to Maryhurst’s campus, located on Dorsey Lane, May 15 to help perform tests for the remaining staff working on the campus.

Maryhurst, which provides services to children and families impacted by abuse and trauma, also convened a COVID-19 taskforce in mid-March with its on-staff nurse manager and operations chief at the helm. In collaboration with local health officials, the task force is meant to ensure compliance with recommended guidelines such as wearing masks

and social distancing.

At the start of April, Maryhurst's health services department began conducting daily temperature checks and routine health screenings for staff.

Maryhurst is also asking for donations from the local community, both financial and in-kind. Due to the organization’s now prolonged hours, resources such as disinfectants are strained.

There are no other confirmed or suspected cases at Maryhurst’s other campuses or locations.
