After a unanimous vote from the Adirondack Central School District Thursday evening, Forestport Elementary School will be closing.

The district said the move will help make up for a $600,000 deficit in the budget but it is a blow to parents who vigorously protested the plan and asked for more input.

At numerous meetings over the last few weeks, many parents said they were worried about school programs, jobs, and what would happen to the building if classes were moved.

The decision means students who attend Forestport Elementary will now be moving into Boonville Elementary School, which means class sizes there will likely increase.

The district said the closure means the district could save over $500,000.

Board members said the closing is a result of a decline in population in the area.
