BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — A little relief is on the way from the cold temperatures across parts of the commonwealth. Bowling Green residents have transformed a plaza full of shops into a warming shelter.
Karen Foley, the executive director for Hotel Inc., an organization that helped set up the warming center, said, “This might be the 12th day in January that we have had this collaborative effort.”
Foley has been overseeing the warming shelters. Opening them up when the temperature dips below 35 degrees.
Foley said, “Just gives people, maybe they have insufficient heat at home, maybe they are living outdoors, sort of gives them rest throughout the day to get away from these frigid temperatures.”
The warming shelters are open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. if it’s cold enough, serving food around noon for anyone for free.
Foley said, “We care about the individual person and care about whatever the circumstances that brought them to where they are.”
Foley added they want to ensure members of the community have a safe place to stay when the temperatures drop.
Foley said, “To make sure we are addressing systems, so no one falls through the cracks.”
Thursday’s warming shelter will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army. Anyone needing a ride can go to the Warren County Public Library to take a shuttle.
