LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A U.S. District Court has ruled against trainer Bob Baffert in his latest challenge to a two-year suspension from Churchill Downs.

What You Need To Know

  • Trainer Bob Baffert has tried repeatedly to challenge his suspension from Churchill Downs

  • The two-time Triple Crown winner was suspended after his horse, Medina Spirit, failed a post-race drug test after winning the 2021 Kentucky Derby

  • The horse was disqualified and Baffert was suspended for two years from Churchill Downs

  • Baffert’s suspension ends on July 3, the last day of the spring meet at Churchill Downs

The court granted Churchill Downs’ motion for summary judgment, resolving what the track said was the last remaining claim in the dispute.

Baffert has been challenging his suspension by the historic racetrack after his horse, Medina Spirit, failed a post-race drug test after winning the 2021 Kentucky Derby. The horse was disqualified from winning the race, and Baffert was suspended for two years from Churchill Downs.

In his latest appeal, Baffert claimed the track made his trainer’s license worthless in Kentucky by suspending him from the track. In their judgment, the court cited Baffert’s use of his license to win $1 million at Keeneland, along with almost a dozen other races where his horses won up to $540,000 per race.

Baffert has made multiple attempts in Kentucky to overturn the track’s ban and his suspension. He also was unsuccessful in suing Churchill Downs Inc. in federal court, with a judge denying his injunction.

“As we stated when we suspended Mr. Baffert in June 2021, we reserve the right to extend his suspension and will communicate our decision at the conclusion of the initial two-year suspension period,” Churchill Downs said in a statement.

Besides his suspension from Churchill Downs, Baffert also served a one-year suspension from the New York Racing Association.

Baffert made his return to the Triple Crown on May 20, when his horse, National Treasure, won the 2023 Preakness Stakes. His suspension from Churchill Downs ends July 3, the last day of the track’s spring meet.
