LOUISVILLE, Ky. — University of Louisville running back Javian Hawkins didn't play in Saturday's game against Virginia and he'll never suit up for the Cardinals again.

Hawkins announced on Twitter Monday that he was opting out of the rest of the season and will enter the NFL draft.

He wrote in his post, "I will forever be grateful to everyone who has contributed to my journey at Louisville."

The redshirt sophomore is fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in rushing with 822 yards rushing. Last year he rushed for 1,525 yards — the most by a running back in school history.

Hawkins' leaving for the NFL isn't new.  Many college players are opting to do the same thing because of the coronavirus, injury, or as a precautionary measure. If they choose to return to school, the NCAA has said they could do so without penalty.

The Cardinals were without Hawkins and other players Saturday in their 31-17 loss to the Cavaliers. The Cards are 2-6 this season.
