Americans are observing the first total solar eclipse in the country in seven years and the last they'll see until 2044. 

The path of totality in the U.S. -- about 115 miles wide -- stretches from Texas to Maine, although clouds have created challenges in some areas. Americans outside the zone are still able to view varying degrees of a partial eclipse. 

Viewers are warned not to look directly at the eclipse to avoid eye injuries.
