What You Need To Know

  • A little more than 17 months before the 2024 presidential election, voters have a better idea of which candidates they absolutely won’t vote for than the one they will support, according to a new Monmouth University poll

  • “Negative opinion can be difficult to shift," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute

  • Just under half of voters — 46% to 48% — said they definitely would not vote for Biden in hypothetical matchups against Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis and Mike Pence, with another 7% to 8% saying they probably would not vote for the incumbent president

  • The percentage of the electorate already ruling out Trump against Biden is about the same, the poll found

The poll, released Thursday, asked voters about the likelihood they would support a particular candidate in three hypothetical general-election matchups. All three scenarios included President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee. Those surveyed were asked about Biden facing either former President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis or former Vice President Mike Pence, all Republicans.

The goal of the poll was to gauge each candidate’s floor and ceiling.

“Negative opinion can be difficult to shift, and when it does it tends to be in the wrong direction for the candidate,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute. “That’s not to say these views won’t change in the next year and a half, but these results are a sign of how few voters are truly up for grabs in our hyper-partisan political environment.”

Just under half of voters — 46% to 48% — said they definitely would not vote for Biden in any of the three matchups, with another 7% to 8% saying they probably would not vote for the incumbent president.

Thirty-two percent said they definitely would support and 13% said they’d likely support Biden against Trump. The backing for Biden was similar in a DeSantis matchup — 31% definitely voting for the current president, 12% probably voting for him.

The percentage of the electorate already ruling out Trump is about the same, the poll found. Forty-six percent of those surveyed said they definitely won’t vote for Trump  if he faces Biden, with another 8% saying they probably would not support the former president.

Twenty-nine percent said they would definitely cast their ballot for Trump, and 12% more said they probably would.

Fewer poll participants said they are dismissing the possibility of voting for DeSantis or Pence, although both of the Republicans are lagging behind both Trump and Biden when it comes to ardent supporters.

Forty-one percent said they definitely won’t vote for DeSantis over Biden — and 11% said they probably would not — while 26% said they’d definitely support the Florida governor and 16% percent said they probably would.

Thirty-six percent ruled out supporting Pence against Biden, and 18% said they probably would not vote for him. Eighteen percent said they’d definitely support Pence, and another 22% said they probably would.

When looking strictly at definite and probable support, Biden outperformed his hypothetical opponent in all three scenarios: 45% to 41% against Trump, 43% to 42% against DeSantis and 42% to 40% against Pence.
