BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The city of Bowling Green had over 30 sinkholes form as a result the April floods. They have developed across the city in residential and business areas.
Don Curtis has a sinkhole in his yard.
Curtis said, “That’s a whole lotta hole.”
The sinkhole formed after the April flooding. The City of Bowling Green’s contractor Scott & Ritter Inc. dug over 50 feet to detect where the water was going.
Curtis said, “Over 100 truckloads of dirt came out of there.”
One business dealing with a sinkhole is the Lover’s Lane Soccer Complex. According to Bowling Green’s geologist Nick Lawhon, the soccer complex and the hole at Curtis’ home are just a couple of the many around tow.
Lawhon said, “We’re tracking a little over 30 sinkholes over the last month, mostly due to the storms in early April.”
Nearly $1 million in funding was approved by the Bowling Green City Commissioners to help the city to make repairs to certain sinkholes. This is almost ten times more than the annual funding the city usually puts into sinkhole repair.
Lawhon said, “It was money from the city’s contingency fund that we keep each year. Essentially, for unexpected circumstances.”
According to Lawhon, the city hopes to repair the sinkholes by July or August. As for Curtis, he’s just going to enjoy watching the progress.
Curtis said, “I’m not worried about it. I think they’ll fix it back when they get the rock in there and put dirt back over it.”
Bowling Green residents are urged to report sinkholes by calling 270-393-3628.
