LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man is dead after police said he stabbed a Louisville Metro Police Department officer.
Officers responded to Arterburn Avenue near Frankfort Avenue Sunday afternoon in the Crescent Hill area for reports of a man acting erratically and breaking windows. Police said he had a knife and refused commands to drop it. When officers tried to arrest him, he resisted.
"A struggle ensued that went to the ground," said Louisville Police Chief Paul Humphrey. "One of the officers attempted to deploy a taser, which was ineffective. During that struggle, the subject retrieved the knife and stabbed an officer in the chest."
Humphrey said the officer's vest stopped the knife from injuring him. Another officer then shot the man, who received medical attention at the scene before he was transported to the UofL Hospital and pronounced dead.
LMPD's Public Integrity Unit will lead the investigation, and body camera footage will be released within 10 business days, Humphrey added. The officers involved are on paid administrative leave, which Humphrey said is normal after these situations.
This is a developing story. We will add more details when they become available.
