WASHINGTON — Rep. James Comer, R-Tompkinsville, chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, plans to set up a new subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE), according to a source familiar with his plans.
First reported by Fox News, the subcommittee mirrors a new effort that President-elect Donald Trump has tapped billionaire Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to lead – the “Department of Government Efficiency,” also known as “DOGE.”
The source said Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene – a flamethrowing Trump ally from Georgia - will lead the subcommittee, with a focus including investigating wasteful spending and looking at ways to eliminate bureaucratic red tape.
The Oversight Committee’s top Democrat, Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, told Spectrum News in a statement:
“It’s hard to keep track of all the new departments and bureaucracies the Republicans are setting up to study the size and efficiency of government … So now a noted student of American government, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, will chair a subcommittee to work with two unvetted billionaires who stand to receive billions more in government contracts and subsidies from the government under Trump.”
Greene has been a highly controversial figure in the past.
In early 2021, when Democrats held the majority, the House voted to strip Greene of her committee assignments as punishment for espousing extreme views and conspiracy theories before taking office
According to a source, Republican lawmakers have met with the incoming White House DOGE team and they are already working together.
Spectrum News reached out to Greene’s office for comment about the new subcommittee.
