Harris’ running mate, Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., pointed to Duvall’s story as part of the vice presidential debate.

Kentucky’s abortion ban, which has been in effect for two years, has no exceptions for rape or incest. Rep. Morgan McGarvey, D-Louisville, said Duvall shouldn't have had the experience she did, but applauded her for sharing what she went through.

“She shouldn’t have to be that voice,” McGarvey said. “We shouldn’t have these cruel, extreme bans in place, so I think it’s sad that we’re having to have this conversation because women don’t have access to abortion in places like Kentucky or in so many other places in the United States.”

Former President Donald Trump, who appointed three U.S. Supreme Court justices who helped to reverse Roe v. Wade, ending the right to an abortion and allowing states to implement bans, posted online he supports exceptions for rape and incest.

Spectrum News asked State Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer, R-Georgetown, if Kentucky Republicans will move to add them to the current law, after legislation to do so stalled in recent years.

“I think it’s something under consideration,” Thayer said. “We didn’t have the votes this last session to add exceptions, but I believe that debate and that discussion is going to continue.”
