FRANKFORT, Ky. — Beginning in Jan. 2025, Kentucky drivers will have to pass a vision test to get their license renewed.

What You Need To Know

  • Changes are coming for Kentucky drivers

  • A vision test will be required for driver’s license renewals beginning in Jan. 2025

  • Right now, vision exams are only required for obtaining a license initially

  • State transportation leaders said many other states have similar requirements

People can either do the test at the driver’s license office or have one done at their eye doctor. A vision exam is currently required to initially get a license.

“If you do fail a vision screening at a driver license regional office, you will be referred to a vision specialist for further evaluation,” said Matt Cole of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. “If the vision is corrected, vision specialists will fill out a form and sign the driver vision testing certification form confirming their patient can safely operate a vehicle and proceed with their license renewal.”

Cole said tests take around a minute to complete. He does not expect the new requirement to make wait times any longer.

Kentucky State Police Capt. Chris Baker said clear vision is essential to being a safe driver. He added the additional exam could help catch eye issues that may get missed otherwise, which he experienced as a teenager.

“I didn't know I had vision problems; when I took my permit test, I failed the vision test, and I had to get corrective lenses,” Baker said. “I've been wearing glasses or contacts ever since.”

A bill passed by the state legislature in 2021 sparked this change. It received overwhelming support by lawmakers.

“Much like mandatory screenings in Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and many other states across the country, this new measure, enacted by state legislature, is designed to ensure drivers maintain good vision standards when behind the wheel throughout their driving career,” Cole said.

KYTC said in a release online and mail-in driver’s license renewals will still be available next year. Those who choose to go that route will need to provide the results of a passed vision test during the renewal process.

Kentucky drivers can renew their license 180 days before it expires, which is roughly six months.
