WASHINGTON — Just over two months after former President Donald Trump survived an attempt on his life in Butler, Penn., members of Kentucky’s congressional delegation once again expressed gratitude that Trump was unharmed after an apparent assassination attempt at Trump International Golf Club in Florida Sunday.

From the Senate floor Monday, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, called for a “thorough, swift, and transparent investigation,” and said this “ought to be a moment of soul-searching for all Americans.”

“It’s a time to reflect on the ways that our political process has been injected by reprehensible violence,” said McConnell. “In America, our democracy flows from the ballot box. Not from the barrel of a gun. Period.”

On Sunday, Rep. James Comer, R-Tompkinsville, posted online he was thankful to the Secret Service and local law enforcement who protected the former President and said, “…Republicans and Democrats must stand together united against extremism and political violence of any kind.”  

Rep. Andy Barr, R-Lexington, offered prayers and said of Trump, “He’s one of the strongest people I know, and I have no doubt he will continue his fight for America with even greater resolve.”

Rep. Morgan McGarvey, D-Louisville, said in an online post, “I’m grateful that the Secret Service acted quickly to ensure the former president was not harmed. Political violence has no place in our country — we must not allow this to be normalized.”
