LEXINGTON, Ky. — First-time Transylvania University students got a taste of campus life an entire week early as they moved in for the new semester.

What You Need To Know

  • First-time college students have begun moving into their dorms at Transylvania University

  • School leaders are assisting with the move and addressing parents who may have concerns

  • Brien Lewis, Transylvania president, said he's expecting nearly 300 first-time students and nearly 1,000 students enrolled

  • Classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 3

Daniel Bennett, instructor of theater, said he has participated in each move-in day since he joined the school's faculty.

“(I) find it cool that we, as the faculty, can give back and kind of make that informal connection with students before the hustle and bustle of the semester,” Bennett said.

Bennett said while it’s useful for students, it’s also an opportunity for parents of first-time students to interact and share their concerns.

“For them to see, maybe, a faculty member or an instructor (who) their student may have a class with, (you can) let them know that it's OK to have the emotions that they're going through today," he said.

Brien Lewis, Transylvania president, said the university is expecting nearly 300 first-time students and nearly 1,000 students enrolled.

“We're looking forward to being back over 1,000 students again for the second year in a row; the first time that's happened since 2015.” Lewis said.

Some things new on campus this year include a revamped stunt team program, the Mitchell Performing Fine Arts Series and a new center for entrepreneurship, which is expected to open in mid-fall.

From academics and athletics to comfortability and camaraderie, Lewis said he and his staff hope to grow more aspects of their school.

“We continue to evolve and meet the needs of students today," he said.
