BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Some Western Kentucky University students are set to attend to New York Fashion Week, set for Sept. 6 through Sept. 11.
They will leave Sept. 5 and make connections with fashion designers while attending. Nic Simmons, who is one student attending, said he has been in love with fashion since he was a teenager.
“For me, it meant something," Simmons said. "It was my form of expression; it was my way to stand out.”
He and other WKU students are set to attend New York Men’s Day, the first day of New York Fashion Week, set for Sept. 6. They will be the only students in attendance.
"I was just extremely thankful when I opened up that email, I found out I got to go," Simmons said.
Seth Howard, WKU fashion merchandising instructor, helped plan the trip and said students will volunteer and help designers with their presentations while checking in guests and maintaining the event space.
Howard made the trip happen through a connection with the director of New York Men’s Day.
“When I started teaching here, I was able to contact her and get some spots open for our students to be able to go and have this great opportunity," he said.
For fashion gurus like Simmons, it’s an opportunity of a lifetime.
“I’m hoping this will open many doors and, really, just make as many connections as I can," Simmons said.
