The president highlighted accomplishments from his first term and his plans for another four years, the mayor said.

“I support President Biden because he is focused on improving the lives for people in Louisville and other cities across America,” Greenberg said. “His top priorities are our top priorities here in Louisville: improving public safety, increasing affordable housing, expanding child care and early childhood learning.”

Greenberg’s support echoes comments this week from Democratic lawmakers in Frankfort, but the party remains divided on Capitol Hill, nearly two weeks after Biden’s shaky debate performance.

“I respect all of these conversations that are going on,” Greenberg said. “There is a clear choice, a clear difference between President Biden and former President Trump. There will be a clear difference in what their administrations would be like.”

Greenberg said Biden acknowledged he had a bad night during the debate but was committed to moving forward.

Kentucky native and actor George Clooney said in a New York Times opinion essay July 10 Democrats need a new nominee, listing Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., among those who could step forward and lead.

Asked again Wednesday about his name coming up, Beshear kept the door open.

“The only way I would ever consider anything other than finishing out this term is if I felt there was a way to help Kentucky in even a greater way, but my plans right now are certainly to finish out this term,” Beshear said.
