LEXINGTON, Ky. — Big Blue fans are cheering from Kentucky to Nebraska as the University of Kentucky baseball team heads to Omaha for its first appearance in the College World Series.
Fans greeted the University of Kentucky baseball team and staff with cheers and applause at Kentucky Proud Baseball Park on Wednesday, June 12, for a send-off to remember.
Wildcat fans like Jennifer Royse say they want to be a part of the celebration. “I was here all weekend, and it was such a good excitement and I can’t go to Omaha,” she said, after attempting to catch a flight.
The team made history in what the athletic department said is an achievement 100 years in the making.
Royse attended the super regional game against Oregon State, when the team clinched its spot in the College World Series.
“I’ve been around Lexington and UK sports all my life, so it’s just exciting. I remember when Kentucky Proud Park was an actual coal pile, and so it’s great to see what they’ve come from,” Royse shared.
Morgan Cameron, who is a sophomore at Asbury University, is supporting her twin brother, UK baseball player Griffin Cameron. She says her family plans on meeting the team in Omaha.
“It has been so exciting. We’ve been going to all the games and just like watching them grow the team, grow in popularity, and see all of Lexington show out. it’s been really exciting to see history be made.” Cameron said.
She says she and her family are true lovers of the sport.
“This is Homer, named after a home run,” she says about the family pup supporting Griffin. “So that explains how our family loves baseball.”
Kentucky plays its first game against N.C. State on Saturday, June 15, at 2 p.m. ET.
