Good news for Memorial Day travelers: gas prices dropped by 13 cents on average in Kentucky, according to AAA East Central’s Gas Price Report.

What You Need To Know

  • Gas prices dropped to $3.23 for a gallon of unleaded gasoline on average in Kentucky

  • The cheapest average price for gas can be found in Owensboro, at $3.05 a gallon

  • The national average price continues to trend downward, falling two cents to $3.59

  • AAA says the drop in gas prices is due to "lackluster" demand and falling oil prices

According to the report, the average price of a gallon of gas in Kentucky this week is $3.23. That’s down from $3.36 a gallon from last week and dead even with the average price from one year ago.

Here are the average prices of unleaded, self-serve gasoline around the state:

$3.27    Bowling Green

$3.15    Elizabethtown

$3.50    Louisville

$3.05    Owensboro

$3.17    Paducah

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gasoline continues to trend downward, falling two cents to $3.59. The travel agency says it’s primarily because of weak domestic demand and oil costs falling below $80 a barrel. The current national average is eight cents less than a month ago but five cents more than a year ago.

New data from the Energy Information Administration show gas demand rose modestly from 8.79 million barrels per day to 8.87 last week. AAA says “lackluster” pre-Memorial Day demand and steady or falling oil prices are contributing to lower pump prices.
