LEXINGTON, Ky. — New townhomes are open for some Lexington families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
What You Need To Know
- Lexington's East End is growing with more affordable housing
- New townhomes were constructed starting in February
- Families will move in this week
- The area was an empty lot for about 50 years
What leaders in Lexington’s housing authority remember as an empty lot for 50 years is the site of five brand new townhomes in its East End near East Sixth Street. It houses people who have dealt with housing challenges over time.
“Now, you hear me talk about affordability to affordable housing," council member Tayna Fogle said. "We're living in affordability.”
Over the past decade, the city’s affordable housing funds put $47 million into building and preserving almost 3,500 units, which is why city leaders joined the housing authority and advocated for the land’s use. Several projects have occurred to grow and maintain the community.
Now, two two-bedroom townhomes with pre-paid utilities are ready for families. Each home and family also receives support from case managers and other social services.
“To those who cared after us even in their hard times ... we wouldn’t have survived without your kindness,” said new resident Michael Black, who is the permanent caregiver of his adult nephew.
Black said he got custody of his nephew in Jan. 2022. He was going to be relocated to a home out of state.
"I've struggled with (finding a home), (a) job, vehicles, and that's why I've ended up here," he said.
He said his main goal now that his new home is open is to settle in, secure stable income and create a safe and more permanent place for them.
