Volunteers built a new fence for a new Portland homeowner.

“We’re working on Josh and Sierra's house," said Glenn Kosse, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville board president. "We're building a fence, as you can see behind us, to keep their dogs in, and we've painted the foundation and the rails of their steps and help work in the yard to clean it up some."

Kosse has been volunteering for about a decade, giving back to many area families.

“Oh, it's wonderful," he said. "Who can beat a great day out here ... and sharing our blessings with other folks? It's a great way to spend an afternoon."

The nonprofit helped six homeowners make repairs Saturday. One homeowner said it’s a “really good” thing the community is coming together to help each other out.

“It's a lot to take on at times (as a) first-time homeowner," said homeowner Joshua Burks. "It was a big step for me, and this helps out a lot."

Habitat for Humanity volunteers did more than just repair homes. They also hosted a community fair to reinforce safe homes and healthy families.

“It's very important to have events like this, especially with everything going on in the world," said Miah Casey, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville marketing and communications manager. "It's just good to bring everybody together and promote togetherness and community and meet each other and know that there's people around that will support you and help."

The next “Love Your Neighborhood” event will be in the Parkland neighborhood in June.
