Volunteers from Owensboro's First Presbyterian Church helped renovate a home for a refugee family moving from Congo, giving it new furniture such as couches, silverware and even beds.

All the furniture came from the International Center of Owensboro, and most of it was free of charge.

Volunteers said some refugees are fleeing from areas that are dangerous to live, and the First Presbyterian Church is trying to ease that process.

“It’s heartwarming," said volunteer Debbie McCoy. "I mean, it’s not a monetary thing.”

It’s also part of the organization's mission: following the golden rule.

“Jesus said, ‘Love God and love your neighbor as yourself,’" said volunteer Marilyn Ericksen. "These are our neighbors.”
