Feeding America and Mount Zion Baptist Church teamed up, distributing bags of fresh produce to people in need for over three hours.

Donald Norton, a veteran who fought in the Gulf War, said he was eager to pick up these vital items.

“It helps us make it through the month,” he said.

According to a 2021 Feeding America survey, Warren County’s food insecurity rate is 12%. That number was even higher for children.

“People don’t realize that in Warren County, when six kids go to bed, two of those kids go to bed hungry,” said Johnalma Barrett, Mount Zion Baptist coordinator.

Dozens of cars lined up to take advantage of free food, looping around the parking lot and spanning about a half-mile long. Norton said he arrived at the drive around 5:45 a.m. and waited approximately two-and-a-half hours. He has been coming to these events for two years and appreciates the generosity, he added.

“It’s a blessing,” he said. “All of it.”
