LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Dental Society hosted its first Free Smiles Clinic of 2024 on Saturday, Jan. 20, offering free dental services to those who are uninsured.
Hygienists, dentists and students took time out of their day to give back to the community.
“I’m going to be doing most of the cleanings that would happen in the clinic but also jump in and help assisting or cleaning instruments when needed as well,” said Kate Keiffner, a volunteer hygienist at the Free Smiles Clinic.
The clinic offers free cleanings, extractions, fillings and X-rays to those who are uninsured.
“I love that I’m able to do this for people, and like I said, provide a service that they would otherwise not have access to,” Keiffner said. “It’s a really good feeling.”
According to WalletHub, Kentucky ranks as the 11th worst state for dental health. The data show that the state had the third-lowest percentage of adults going to the dentist in 2022.
“[It’s] very important to take care of your mouth as it is the pathway to the rest of the body,” Keiffner said. “It’s nice that we can help people out as far as educating them on the importance of keeping their gums healthy.”
Last month, the Free Smiles Clinic hit a milestone, passing $1 million worth of free dental care.
“Sometimes when I talk about it, I get a little bit choked up,” said James Ransdell, a dentist at the free clinic. “But I’m blessed with these skills, and I’m blessed to be around this wonderful group of volunteers and patients as well.”
Ransdell said the society is seeking more volunteer dentists and hygienists. The next clinic will be Feb. 17, and appointments are required, which can be made over the phone. More information can be found on the clinic’s website.
