LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Every person deserves a warm festive meal on Thanksgiving, especially those with no place to call home. It’s why each year, Wayside Christian Mission in Louisville serves holiday meals to the city’s homeless residents.

What You Need To Know

  • Wayside Christian Mission served Thanksgiving meals to Louisville’s homeless residents

  • The yearly event is held at the Hotel Louisville

  • People are served breakfast, lunch, and dinner

  • Mission staff credits the hard work of its volunteers for making this possible

The all-day operation isn’t possible without the hundreds of volunteers who spend part of their day at the Louisville Hotel serving others.

Veronica Eubank is one of them.

“For one, because it's better to serve and better to give than to receive, And it's a warm feeling to help someone else,” Eubank said.

This is the first time Eubank has returned to volunteer since the beginning of the pandemic. Prior to that, she says she and her family spent Thanksgiving here for five years.

“It's a wonderful thing; it just means there's more of us in Kentucky that believes giving back is better than to receive,” Eubank said.

The Mission provided breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Throughout the day, several musical performances were also held, including from the Wayside Choir.

“It's a very good time for our folks in the homeless (community) to experience what many of us remember as a family style holiday,” Nina Moseley, chief operating officer of Wayside Christian Mission said.

Moseley adds between breakfast and lunch, around 300 volunteers came to help out.

“Volunteer turnout is better,” Moseley said. “It hasn't come up to the level it was before the pandemic. But it is getting a little bit better each year.”

Looking ahead, the Mission will do a similar service on Christmas Day. Moseley says they are in need of more volunteers to help next month.
