BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Bowling Green residents in the Grider Pond Area woke up to Ku Klux Klan flyers on their property on Oct. 1.

What You Need To Know

  • KKK flyers showed up in a neighborhood in the Grider Pond Area on Oct. 1

  • Similar literature has been popping up in other parts of Kentucky

  • Widespread attention has caused national organizations such as the Council on American-Islamic Rights to publicly condemn these flyers

The Warren County Sheriff's Office publicly condemned the materials.

In a Facebook post, the Sheriff’s Office said, “The inflammatory nature of this trash purports to create division and a sense of authority. We as an agency serve all of our citizens fairly in a community where we value unity and a rule of law.”

The concern became widespread and even caught the attention of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a nonprofit that advocates for American Muslim civil rights.

CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said that this is the KKK's way of spreading hateful messages. “It’s just recruiting efforts,” Hooper said. “They put them in mailboxes, they throw them in driveways. We’re seeing this not only in Kentucky, but nationwide. Every day we’re seeing these kinds of things, it’s really tragic.”

However, according to Hooper, the way to combat actions like these is to not be silent.

“When we see that this kind of the is being promoted, we speak out against it,” Hooper said. “Bigotry thrives in darkness. You have to turn over the rock. Expose them for what they are. And speak out strongly for mutual respect in our society.”

According to Hooper, the only way to diminish the behavior is to expose it.

“Bigotry knows no limits. When people hate Muslims, they hate minority communities of all stripes,” Hooper said. “And that’s why it’s important to speak out.”

The Warren county Sheriff’s Office said that if anyone has seen people putting out these flyers, to call them at 270-842-1633.
