KENTUCKY — During this In Focus Kentucky segment, current Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman, D-Ky., discusses her confirmation to attend and speak at this year’s Fancy Farm Picnic in Graves County.
Other candidates running for other statewide offices are also expected to attend.
The first Fancy Farm picnic started in 1880, but it did not become Kentucky’s top political event until 1931, when A.B. “Happy” Chandler made an appearance while campaigning for Lieutenant Governor. Since then, it has been dubbed the “Super Bowl of Kentucky politics” and the traditional kick-off to the fall campaign season in Kentucky.
“So you know, Fancy Farm is one of the greatest political traditions in our country. And so it’s an honor to be able to play a small role in that event,” Coleman said.
“I kind of think I have a little bit of an unfair advantage because I was a high school teacher. So you know, you have to be quick on your feet with high school students. But on a serious note, it’s an opportunity for us to travel to West Kentucky to deliver our message and our vision for a better Commonwealth for everybody. There’s a few little quips, maybe a few little jokes and jabs that get thrown along the way all in jest and all in good fun and all in support of St. Jerome’s Parish, there in Fancy Farm. So we’re looking forward to it. It’s always a good time to be surrounded by friends and supporters and it’s always a little hot too,” explained Coleman.
