TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays have been giving fans a lot to cheer about this season with the best record in the league, but a recent home game left the entire stadium in awe after a fan aided someone having a heart attack.
Janie Morales, an ultrasound tech certified in CPR, went to Friday's game versus the Texas Rangers as part of a date night with her boyfriend Ken Frey, a former college baseball player and current youth coach.
Little did they know that this outing would lead to a life-or-death situation.
Shortly before the game began, a man seated just a few rows away from Morales suffered a heart attack. Frey urged Morales to take action, saying, "Babe, you gotta go over there."
"I literally just jumped over people and ran," said Morales. Upon reaching the distressed man, Morales found him unconscious and turning blue. She quickly assessed the situation and realized she needed to perform CPR.
In the critical moments that followed, she says time stopped, and she, along with some other fans, suddenly became an All-Star Team.
Morales recounted the intense experience, stating, "I did three sets of 30, so I did my compressions. I did my breaths. I finally got him back on the third one, and I’m just consoling him, but he’s still not responsive. But I got a pulse and I got him breathing."
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) arrived shortly afterward and took over, rushing the man to the hospital. Thankfully, he is now in stable condition.
Reflecting on the incident, Morales humbly said, "I just knew what I had to do, and I didn’t panic, and I just did it. As crazy as that sounds. And I don’t even know this guy."
Recognizing Morales's heroic efforts, Rays Manager Kevin Cash personally sent her a video message expressing his gratitude.
"Hi Janie. I just wanted to thank you," Cash said in the message. "I applaud you for your heroic efforts. It means so much to have special people at the ballpark, and you were probably the most special person Friday night."
In addition to the heartfelt message, the Rays organization gifted Morales a bag filled with Rays merchandise as a token of appreciation.
"I got my Rays towel," Morales shared excitedly. "Those are super cool. They just gave me gifts to say thank you. It was really neat, and the dugout gave me a ball. So I have a ball from the players."
