The Fisher House is now open at the VA Hospital in Lexington. This is the second home of its kind in Kentucky.

Matthew Bradford used the Fisher House in 2007 when he was receiving care after serving in Iraq.

He found a sense of community there.

“The best thing in the world was to come back to the Fisher House and to sit in the living room and chit-chat with someone that you were in therapy with, but you didn’t have the chance to talk to them,” Bradford.

There are currently 93 Fisher Houses across the country. They allow veteran’s caregivers and family member a comfortable and inviting place to stay, at no cost, while their loved one is receiving care.

“Providing that escape to where you can go off an understand that everything is taken care of,” Bradford said.

Bradford says that the accommodations allowed him to focus on healing.

“I was thinking about my rehab. Like I was fully thinking about that because I knew my mom, who was with me then, is not worried about paying hotel bills.”

The Lexington house has 16 bedrooms, a large kitchen and living room. The house also has a unique Kentucky touch.

The VA Hospital staffs the House and costs about $10 million.
