At nearly $1.5 billion dollars, the Amazon Air Hub is the single largest investment one of the biggest companies in the world has ever made, employing over 2,000 people.

“We are grateful and proud that they chose Kentucky,” Beshear said.

Beshear, who toured the facility, said Kentucky is coming off its two best years of economic development in its history, and that the Air Hub is one of the big reasons.

“Before 2020, we averaged about $5 billion in new investments a year. The last two years, $21 billion, and two of our best years for creating jobs,” Beshear said.

The Air Hub processes 36 flights a day, and hundreds of thousands of packages, using innovative technology. However, in recent months, there has been a push by some employees, who say they’re being paid unfairly, to unionize.

Amazon Global Air Vice President Sarah Rhoads said there has been an open line of communication with employees.

“We have and enjoy a very direct relationship with our associates or employees here. The team takes great pride in not only what they do, but having a direct relationship with the leadership team as well,” Rhoads said.

Some of those employees tell Spectrum News 1 there have been efforts made to discourage people from unionizing.

“I support our unions here in Kentucky, but it’s ultimately up to the workers in this facility. They will make that decision. And I will say that amazon offers some incredible benefits that are here,” Beshear said.

The National Labor Relations Board requires at least 30% of workers to sign a petition to hold an election for a union. Those efforts are ongoing at the air hub.
