LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson County voters will have more locations to cast their ballot in next month’s special election. This comes after Secretary of State Michal Adams disagreed with the number of locations originally submitted by the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office.

What You Need To Know

  • A special election will be held Feb. 21

  • It is for State Senate District 19, which is in Jefferson County

  • Voters will have 12 locations to vote at on election day

  • Nearly 100,000 people live in District 19

“That wasn’t enough, and so on that basis, I objected,” Adams said.

Two candidates, Republican Misty Glin and Democrat Cassie Chambers Armstrong, will face off next month to replace Morgan McGarvey in the State Senate. McGarvey represented District 19 before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

District 19 has a population of nearly 100,000 people.

To secure more polling places, Adams reached out to Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio. The district agreed to let the county use eight schools on election day.

This plan tripled the number of locations to 12.

Adams says the county and his office agree on the change.

On Friday, the Kentucky Board of Elections met to discuss the plan. The board unanimously approved it.

Adams says it’s not unheard of for counties to offer a low number of polling places. He says more needs to be done to prevent these situations from happening.

“And this is going to keep reoccurring as long as county clerks have an incentive to not open the polls,” Adams said. “They get paid based on the precincts they have, not how many they open to voters, and so I have asked the legislature to correct that in their budget process and reward clerks for opening precincts as opposed to not opening precincts.”

The Secretary of State’s office is currently working on a bill to address this, which Adams says will be introduced when lawmakers return to the Capitol for the remainder of the legislative session.

The upcoming special election will take place Feb. 21. Early voting will be held on Feb. 16-18.
