BRANDENBURG, Ky. — On Dec. 26, the Meade County Water District posted on Facebook a Boil Water Advisory. The message also notified the customers that they may be without water for eight to 10 hours. At noon today, the post had been shared nearly 400 times.
“It’s nobody’s fault, but it’s like trying to get, you have an eight-ounce glass and you only have six ounces of water. You can’t fill that glass up if you don’t have enough water,” Brett Pyles, the general manager of Meade County Water District, said.
The water district has three tanks that are responsible for distributing the water. Pyles says currently two of the three are filled. Along with the freezing temperatures, people gathering for the holidays also took a toll on the water amount.
“Everyone was at home instead of at work, and you use a lot more water at home than you do at work. So the demand for water went up that way,” Pyles said.
The Meade County Water District is currently collecting bacteriological samples to confirm the safety of the water. The Division of water requires the water district to take nine samples. But, for an overabundance of caution, Pyles says Meade County Water District is taking 12.
“To make sure when the water does come back, it’s safe for our customers to drink,” he explained.
Pyles says that the issue happening was something they had little ability to prevent. “We certainly apologize for any inconvenience. It was circumstances out of our control.”
As of 10 a.m., Pyles said he is hoping to have the water turned back on for everyone in 10 to 12 hours.
Meade County Water District also said that they are working on adding an additional interconnect which would come through the Louisville Water Company, opening in two to three years.
