LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency ahead of Thursday’s winter storm, asking everyone to stay indoors and avoid travel. But many last-minute Christmas shoppers weren’t deterred.

What You Need To Know

  • Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency ahead of Thursday’s winter storm

  • He advised Kentuckians to stay indoors and off of the icy roadways

  • The winter storm hasn’t stopped many last minute Christmas shoppers

  • The storm has claimed the lives of three Kentuckians so far, Beshear said

Since then, Beshear said the storm has claimed the lives of three Kentuckians. Two of the individuals who died were in car-related accidents and one unsheltered individual in Louisville succumbed to the cold temperatures.

As the winter storm continues to bring dangerously cold conditions and sub zero wind chills through the weekend, Beshear is reminding Kentuckians of the same message: stay indoors.

“Stay inside. You can get frostbite after 20 to 30 minutes of exposure,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “It can be very painful a lot earlier than that. It is too dangerous to be outside.”

Despite the drop in temperatures and travel dangers Beshear addressed when he declared a state of emergency, many Kentuckians were out and about for one reason, and one reason only.

“Christmas gifts because I’m a procrastinator, habitually,” Chandler Norfleet said.

“Last minute Christmas shopping,” Janae Caldwell said.

Spectrum News 1 asked holiday shoppers what the roads were like heading to some of their favorite stores.

“They were fine, they weren’t great, there’s a little bit of black ice, everybody is going pretty slow like 40 miles per hour on the interstate and Shelbyville road wasn’t terrible,” Norfleet said. “Everyone is doing a good job looking out for each other and being pretty safe.”

When asked if the advice to stay off the roads affected their decision, it was a resounding “no.”

“No, it’s not that bad, honestly. If you drive slow, pay attention, you’ll be okay,” Caldwell said.

Many shoppers told Spectrum News 1 they have seen much worse over the years.
