LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer joined multiple organizations to announce several fun and educational opportunities for children and families during the holiday season. Camps, movies and sports clinics are just a few of the dozens of activities available for local youth looking for productive things to do during the upcoming Jefferson County Public Schools winter break.

What You Need To Know

  • Among the highlights is a free, three-day youth basketball camp hosted by Valentine at the Cyril Allgeier Community Center

  • The Louisville Zoo is offering a new “School’s Out Safari Discount” as well as a winter break camp Dec. 19-23

  • The Louisville Free Public Library will host over 100 free programs for kids, teens and families, including storytimes, crafts, film screenings and games

  • The Kentucky Science Center is having “Pay-by-Day” camps throughout the break as well as $5 movie showings

The mayor was joined by officials with Louisville Parks and Recreation, the Louisville Free Public Library and the Kentucky Science Center, as well as local basketball star Robbie Valentine.

“Parents who are looking for affordable, fun and festive ways to celebrate the holidays and keep their kids active during their winter break have plenty of options once again this year,” said Fischer. “We want students to enjoy their time off but also keep their minds and bodies active.”

Among the highlights is a free, three-day youth basketball camp hosted by Valentine. The camp is geared toward boys and girls of all skill levels and will teach the fundamentals of basketball, as well as the principles of teamwork and individual responsibility.

The camp is offered to kids ages 6-16 and will take place Dec.19-21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cyril Allgeier Community Center. You can learn more and register here.

Other community partners are also jumping in on the fun:

  • The Louisville Zoo is offering a new “School’s Out Safari Discount” as well as a winter break camp Dec. 19-23.
  • The Louisville Free Public Library will host over 100 free programs for kids, teens and families, including storytimes, crafts, film screenings and games.
  • The Kentucky Science Center is having “Pay-by-Day” camps throughout the break as well as $5 movie showings.
  • The Sun Valley Community Center is having a Winter Break Camp Dec. 19-23 and Dec. 27-30.
  • The Beechmont Community Center is hosting a dinner with Santa Claus on Dec. 15. The event is 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and is free. Register by visiting bestparksever.com and click on “Recreation Class Registration” on the homepage.
  • Louisville Parks and Recreation is offering youth basketball leagues at the Cyril Allgeier Community Center beginning in January and running through March. Registration can be found at bestparksever.com.
  • Louisville Metro Police Activities League is hosting a Christmas Candy Making Class with LMPD’s own Dawn Hall and her daughter Samantha. The class is for kids ages 8-17. To register, visit louisvillepal.org.

Each of the city’s 14 community centers will be open throughout the break with organized winter break activities planned at various centers. Centers are equipped with WiFi, computer labs, gyms, exercise equipment and more.
