KENTUCKY — Amazon is hiring fewer seasonal and regular employees this year, company officials said this week. This comes despite the continued skyrocketing shift to online shopping.

The U.S. Census Department reports e-commerce sales went up 7.4% during 2022’s second quarter compared to 2021 in that same quarter. But Amazon is scaling back its hiring, looking to add about 150,000 jobs throughout the United States, which includes seasonal, full-time and part-time positions.

The number is down about 50,000 from last year. Amazon’s spokesperson Andre Woodson said coming out of the pandemic, the workforces’ needs have stabilized.

“We’re no longer hiring at the same pace we were last year. In 2021, we created more than 200,000 full and part-time jobs across the country. While our pace may have slowed, we continue to hire and are excited to create more than 150,000 permanent and seasonal roles,” said Woodson.

Over 3,000 of the 150,000 jobs will be available in the Commonwealth. 1,500 of those jobs will be available in the Greater Cincinnati area.

The company says they’ve dedicated a lot of hiring efforts in Cincinnati, Louisville and Lexington, but this season they’re hoping to pique the interest of smaller areas like Campbellsville.

“We’re proud to offer a variety of roles from picking, packing and shipping to supporting network logistics. And the people that will fill those positions in these buildings will likely play a big part in making sure we can deliver for our customers this holiday season and beyond,” said Woodson.

Candidates applying for seasonal positions have the opportunity to transition to full-time work.

Over the next year, Amazon has also vowed to invest 1 billion dollars in additional pay. That will bring the hourly average pay to more than $19 an hour based on the location.

Currently, eleven states that need the greatest number of employees for the company ahead of the holiday season include: California, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Oregon, Texas, Tennessee, Utah and Washington.
