Cut and Paste chief craftsperson Laurie Evans is hoping to bring out a fun and creative time away from school for Lexington’s youth and beyond.

“Most of what we do during the break it’s just drop-in crafting. so families come in, they walk into the back, they sit down, they pick out a craft, they paint it that day, they blow dry it and they take it home.”

With Evans’ help, kids as young as five created advanced pieces of art like marbled cylinders and a special technique called hydro-dipping for more decorative work.

Adding paint drops, the kids are creating colorful illusions. “On top of the water that we treated with some starch and then they’re going to dip their picture frames and get a look like this,” Evans said.

Inside the studio sit several stations for guests to participate in various forms of arts and crafts like door hanger making, painting, needle felting and more.

The studio offers take-home craft kits and crafting classes like its upcoming Hocus Pocus-themed paint and trivia night this Tuesday.

Artwork waiting to be claimed when dry sits in a room dedicated to celebrations.

For nearly seven years, Evans and the studio have hosted birthday parties, socials, and private gatherings throughout Kentucky.

“In our old building we left behind 700 handprints on the wall so in total in the last seven years we’ve had 800, I think 825, birthday parties.”

Tenlee Simpson says she has attended a few birthday parties and is patiently waiting for her chance to host her own. “I haven’t yet, but I would like to.”

Evans, who updates supporters via social media, says the studio is one of the remaining few after the pandemic’s impact. The Cut and Paste craft studio is located in the Keithshire Place Shopping Center off Clays Mill road and is an expansion from its original location.

The studio is open for seasonal crafting and more Tuesday through Sunday.
