The weekend is about coming together with pride for the community, said Daphne Walker, communications outreach specialist with Russell: A Place of Promise.

"It’s important to have this in our community because a lot of times in the media, our communities are misrepresented, but there’s also a lot of positive assets in this community: Black businesses, Black families, a wealth of history and it’s just important to remind everyone of that," she said.

On Friday, there’s a Soul Train-inspired soiree at the Louisville Central Community Center.

Historic walking and trolley tours of the neighborhood are set for Saturday, along with a block party.

On Sunday, Russell and other West End residents are invited to share their stories at the legendary venue, Joe’s Palm Room.

"It’s important because it gives the whole city an opportunity to come over here and see the people and see the culture that we have on this side of town and to erase some of the stigmas that exist today," said the venue's co-owner, Butch Mosby.

Russell: A Place of Promise is also fundraising for a storytelling project that will include interviews from the community to help preserve the history of the neighborhood.

“A lot of things get erased in our communities and that can lead to us losing a sense of home and so it’s important that we remember these to pass down to our grandchildren and their grandchildren for years to come," said Walker.

They plan to share those stories in an exhibit in November.
