LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and leadership of the Louisville Fire Department will gather at a memorial ceremony at the department’s headquarters in downtown Louisville Sunday to commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

The commemoration begins at 10 a.m.

“Every year on Sept. 11, we come together to grieve for those we lost, to remember the heroism of the brave first responders and to be resolved that we will never tolerate or allow terrorism to target the United States of America,” Beshear said in a statement. “Today we remember – and it reminds us all to be better.”

Flags on all state office buildings will be lowered to half-staff on Sunday in accordance with a proclamation from the White House in honor of Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance and those lost in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Sunday marks the 21st anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives between New York City, Washington D.C. and Shanksville, Pa.
