LEXINGTON, Ky. — Crews have been working around the clock after 1.5 million gallons of water flooded a church in Lexington on Monday.

What You Need To Know

  • Servpro Lexington removed over 1.5 million gallons of water from inside Rosemont Baptist Church

  • The basement of the church is destroyed, and it also impacted four houses in the neighborhood

  • Kentucky American Waters says the flooding came from a 16-inch water main break

  • The break happened on Rosemont Garden and Clays Mill Road

Jeff Smith, co-owner of Servpro Lexington says 24 hours ago, there was over nine feet of water inside Rosemont Baptist Church.

“Like a bomb went off, so I mean it was under nine feet of water, so I mean just everything is gone. There is debris everywhere,” Smith said.

Kentucky American Waters says the flooding came from a 16-inch water main break on Rosemont Garden and Clays Mill Road.

Randy Byzet has been a member of the church for 40 years.

“I just know it’s gonna be a long, long process to get things back even close to normal,” Byzet said.

Byzet says when he came to the church on Monday, the water was shooting out of the main, nearly 30-40 feet in the air.

“But then you walk in and you look at the basement and the water is up to the top of the stairs and it’s just and you can see the mud on the top and it’s floating,” Byzet said.

Smith says the flood waters also damaged four other houses in the neighborhood.

Byzet says this gives them an opportunity to connect with their community and help their neighbors who are also in need.

“We’re gonna try to reach out to some of the neighbors to see if there’s something we can do to help them,” Byzet said.

Byzet says the church just celebrated its 75th anniversary last month and hopes to rebuild the areas damaged over the next few months.

Kentucky American Water says they completed the repair of the water main Monday evening and have restored service to those in the area.
