MAYSVILLE, Ky. — Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said a group of senators are discussing potential school safety measures — led by Texas Republican John Cornyn and Connecticut Democrat Chris Murphy; but he said little else about gun reform Tuesday.
“Discussing how we might be able to come together to target the problem, which is mental illness and school safety,” McConnell said, following a speech to the Rotary Club of Maysville. “We get back at it next week and we hope to have some results.”
McConnell left before answering a question about how this time, following a deadly school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, will be different from other mass shootings.
A day earlier, President Joe Biden said he believes McConnell is a “rational Republican” who will come to the table to discuss new restrictions on guns, despite the Senate GOP leader’s track record of opposing major pieces of gun control legislation.
“I think that it has gotten so bad that everybody’s getting more rational about it; at least that’s my hope and prayer,” Biden said. “I consider McConnell a rational Republican, and Cornyn as well. I think there’s a recognition on their part that we can’t continue like this. We can’t do this.”
