Spectrum News is profiling each candidate for Louisville mayor. So who is Craig Greenberg?

“I am a proud father. I am a proud husband to an amazing wife, Rachel. Dad to Daniel and Benjamin,” said Greenberg, one of the Democrats running to be Louisville’s next mayor. “I care about my city a lot. I’ve always cared about my city. I grew up loving Louisville.”

Greenberg was born in New York but raised in the Derby City. He attended Jefferson County Public Schools. After getting his undergrad degree from the University of Michigan, he went to law school and returned home. Greenberg helped start and lead 21C Museum Hotels.

Greenberg said he is a curious person who loves to learn about new things. To him, it’s all about family. It’s something his parents taught him growing up that he keeps close to heart today.

“Something that I learned, that I’ve reflected a lot on before I made the decision to leave my previous job and run for mayor, is a concept that I learned through my religious upbringing, which is: ‘repair the world.’ A simple notion that every day weighs large and small personally or professionally, we should each try to make the world a better place.” Greenberg explained.

You might remember earlier this year in February, local activist Quintez Brown allegedly shot at Greenberg in his Butchertown office. Brown is in jail facing federal charges. One of the bullets grazed Greenberg’s clothes, but no one was injured in the attempted shooting.

“I saw a gun pointed directly at me and 6 shots were fired directly at me,” Greenberg recalled. “I’m very fortunate and blessed to still be here today.”

Greenberg said his resolve is stronger than ever.

“Public safety was always my number one priority since I started running for mayor, but an even stronger resolve to work day and night, work with folks across the entire city who want to be a part of the solution to implement proven methods to make Louisville a safer city.” Greenberg said.

Spectrum News 1 caught up with Greenberg as he walked through a Louisville neighborhood with his wife to meet and shake hands with potential voters. He said being on the ground has helped him understand what matters to Louisvillians.

“It’s been really helpful to me, because it helps me understand common issues that people across Louisville, regardless of where they live, what their concerns are, what their ideas are.” Greenberg said.

Greenberg is an avid runner. He has even run in marathons in different parts of the country. In fact, in some of his campaign ads, you can see him running through several of Louisville’s precincts.

“Not only have I gotten to see every corner of the city, I’ve gotten to meet so many people and really learn from them and hear about their issues. Not just their challenges, but also their ideas.” Greenberg said.
